Vladimir Dmitrievich Ilyukhin is a People’s Artist of the RSFSR and the MASSR, the largest master of Mordovian and modern Russian fine art of the XX — the early XXI century. He and his work vividly reflected the spirit of the era with its fervent optimism and patriotism, confidence in the civic position, the search for harmony and justice. The formation and development of the master’s art was influenced with the heroic enthusiasm of the 1930s, studying at the school of young talents at the Academy of Arts in Leningrad, the Great Patriotic War, in which he took part. The artist is a bright representative of socialist realism in its best traditions, which was expressed in the creation of the image of a positive hero, a creator of a new life. In art, the painter developed the idea of righteous harmony, understanding it as the ideal of Russia’s being, realizing the spiritual and artistic idea of the “truth of life”. The main themes of his works are historical and national ones. After he became famous in 1952 with the painting “The Meeting of A.V. Suvorov and F. F. Ushakov in Sevastopol”, he revealed the history of the Motherland in the portraits of his contemporaries. The heroes of his canvases were peasants and creative people, their images sound like symbols of the era. In the landscape he also revealed the positive ideal necessary for the modern society, reflecting on the harmony of man, nature, time, asserting a sense of the fullness of life and a patriotic cognition of the Homeland. V. D. Ilyukhin is rightfully considered a people’s artist, he expressed the soul of his nation in its search for a righteous harmony, without which the Russian soul cannot live. The foundations of the painter’s worldview and creative method are patriotism, historical optimism, boundless love for Russia and his small homeland — Mordovia. The artist’s works, filled with universal content, remain relevant and belong to the classics of the Russian culture of the XX — XXI centuries.
