Abstraсt

The article attempts to present the information potential of the metric books, a register in which the parish clergy recorded those born, married and deceased. This traditional historical source was used by the authors in a somewhat unusual perspective — in the study of universal military service. As a result of the analysis, the personal data of the reserve soldiers were restored, and an idea of the combat path of the natives of the Mordovian region was compiled. Based on the database worked out by the authors of the article, it is concluded that the age of married soldiers and officers who completed military service decreased during the last third of the XIX century.
