The Great War of 1914 — 1918 through the Prism of Family Memory

Sysuev D. A.

Abstraсt

The article is devoted to the characteristics of the participation of natives of Saransk and the Saransk district in one of the key events of the early twentieth century — the Great War of 1914 — 1918. The presented material is unique in that it is based on evidence from the author’s family archive, as well as documents from the Central State Archive of the Republic of Mordovia and the funds of the Russian State Military Historical Archive. For the first time, previously unpublished factual data are provided describing the events of the war and the presence of representatives of various branches of the same family who took part in the hostilities as part of the 80th Vindavsky Infantry Regiment and the 320th Chembarsky Infantry Regiment formed in Saransk, as well as the 56th Siberian Rifle Regiment formed in Omsk. The example of specific individuals shows the contribution of residents of the territory of present-day Mordovia to the nationwide feat of defending the Fatherland in the context of the First World War, unprecedented for that time in its scale. This article may be of scientific and educational interest to genealogists, historians, and anyone interested in local history issues.
