The article analyzes the first stage of the military-organizational activities of the commander of the Eastern Front M. A. Muravyev, one of the most controversial leaders of the Red Army during the Russian Civil War of 1917 — 1922. The source base for the research was, first of all, documents from the Russian State Military Archive (RGVA), which are introduced into scientific circulation for the first time. The study of this array of materials was carried out using general scientific (analysis, synthesis, deduction, induction) and historical methods (descriptive, historical-genetic, historical-comparative, historical-systemic). As a result, the following conclusions were made. During the first week of his tenure as commander of the Eastern Front, M. A. Muravyev, on the basis of various “fronts”, groups and directions, outlined the foundation of the first three armies (the 1st, 2nd and 3rd), and also began staffing the headquarters of some of them with qualified military specialists. In addition, with the help of units of the 1st Army, on June 18 — 20, 1918, he attempted to capture Syzran, which had been lost a few days earlier. Despite the unsuccessful completion of the offensive operation M. A. Muravyev, using the example of the troops of one combat sectors, did not get the most positive idea of the Red Army, which needed to be urgently reorganized.
