The article reveals the main milestones in the life of one of the first leaders of the Research Institute of Mordovian Culture (now the Research Institute of the Humanities by the Government of the Republic of Mordovia) P. V. Galaev; his role in the formation of a professional team of researchers and the intensification of research work at the institute is emphasized. During the year of P.V. Galaev’s tenure as director of the institute, the 3rd Mordovian language conference was held, structural changes took place in the structure of the institute, the activities of literary scholars and folklorists intensified, a professional team of researchers was formed, etc. At the same time, the personnel policy of the new director caused dissatisfaction part of the employees, which led to a confrontation between the director and some representatives of the team, which ended with the dismissal of P.V. Galaev. The reasons were both violations of financial discipline and the personal qualities of the director, as well as contamination of the institute with “class-alien elements”. The last accusation was decisive, because the country was gradually approaching the era of the “Great Terror”. In 1937 P.V. Galaev was arrested and executed in 1938.
