Abstraсt

The article analyzes the activities of one of the most famous member of the humanitarian intelligentsia of Mordovia in the 1930s. — Serafim Petrovich Werner, who took an active part in the formation of the two largest research, cultural and educational institutions of the republic — Research Institute of the Humanities by the Government of the Republic of Mordovia and Voronin Mordovian Republican United Museum of Local History. The main source for the research was the materials of two archives — the Central State Archive of the Republic of Mordovia (CSA RM) and the Scientific Archive of the Research Institute of the Humanities by the Government of the Republic of Mordovia. Many of the discovered documents are being introduced into scientific circulation for the first time. To study these documents, general scientific methods (analysis, synthesis, deduction, induction), and historical methods (biographical, historical-genetic, historical-comparative, historical-systemic) are used. Analysis of identified documents makes it possible to highlight several areas of Werner’s activities in the specified chronological period — the organization of the local history movement, archaeological research and the construction of the main exhibition of the museum. In parallel Werner was engaged in writing scientific and popular science historical works, many of which were never published. Serafim Petrovich proved himself to be an active, inquisitive, persistent, versatile scholar, distinguished by his amazing scale when setting goals and objectives.
