Apartment houses in the cultural space of a capital and provincial city

Abstraсt

The role of apartment house-construction in the cultural space of a capital and provincial city is considered in the article. Particular attention is paid to the difference in apartment house-construction in the “first capital” of the Russian Empire St. Petersburg and the provincial city — the “capital of the Volga region” — Saratov. In St. Petersburg -construction made up 80 % of the total housing stock, so apartment houses formed entire architectural ensembles, a dense continuous chain. No less important was the intellectual life that took place inside an apartment house. In this perspective, the history of the “Literary House” and the Muruzi House is considered. It is noted that the first one is associated with the Golden Age of Russian literature, the second — with the Silver Age. There were fewer apartment houses in the province, they were located discretely, being a lonely decoration of the surrounding architectural landscape. Even the largest provincial apartment house was inferior to the capital one both in size and grandeur. However, provincial tenements were full of calm, restraint and moderation. As a result, it is noted that the apartment houses of the turn of the XIX — XX centuries not only brought income to their owner, but also often became genuine architectural monuments, “cultural nests”, historical and cultural monuments which played a significant role in the formation of the architectural appearance of both capital and provincial cities.
