Abstraсt

In the middle of the XIX century, Samara, located on the Volga River, became the provincial center. This circumstance contributed to the social and cultural uplift of the population, the emergence and development of such elements of civil society as voluntary associations and amateur creative work. Teachers of Samara schools, gymnasiums, uyezd and parish schools played an important role in these modernization processes. Thanks to the numerical growth of the intelligentsia (including professional teachers) and its social activity, Samara was not only the youngest and fastest developed provincial city of the Russian Empire, but also one of the leaders in the implementation of transformations of social and spiritual spheres of life in the Russian province of the era of preparation and implementation of Great reforms. The results of the study of the social activities of the local intelligentsia enrich the knowledge about this page of the all-Russian and regional history, and will also contribute to the conduct of similar studies in other territorial and time frames. The source base of the research was made up of archival and published materials of various nature, primarily office records, reference and statistical information, etc.
