The article reveals the role of the local intelligentsia in the formation of regional identity that contributed to strengthening relations between the center and the periphery in the Russian Empire by the example of the activities of the Olonets local historian Alexander Ivanov (1820 — 1890). Close attention is paid to the period of his tenure as the secretary of the Olonets province statistical committee. He served as the main organizer of the work of this institution for more than two decades, including the period of preparation and celebration of the bicentennial anniversary of the birth of Peter the Great. The author analyzes the significant actions of A. I. Ivanov in the process of the formation of cultural memory about the era of Peter the Great on the basis of archival and published sources: the preparation of the historical popular science essay about the activities of Peter the Great in the Olonets region, as well as the active participation in the establishing, acquisition and development of the Olonets natural-industrial and historical-ethnographic museum in which many objects represented the era of Peter the Great. It was concluded that the local intelligentsia aimed to emphasize the importance and uniqueness of the Olonets province the history of which was defined as an essential part of the heroic past of the country by referring to Peter the Great. The efforts contributed to the formation of consistent cultural memory, the emergence of an “imagined community” identified with the Empire not only in the past, but also in the present.
