Abstraсt

70 years have passed since the death of I. V. Stalin, but disputes about his personality and contribution not only to national, but also to world history still persist. The death of the “leader of the peoples” was a significant event, which meant the end of an entire era in the history of our state. In this regard, the study of the reaction of society to the death of I. V. Stalin in such a peripheral and multiethnic region as the Mordovian ASSR is of particular relevance. The material of the study was publications in regional newspapers, which give an idea of the events that took place. Using ideographic, historical-systemic, historical-comparative and retrospective methods, the reaction of the inhabitants of Mordovia to the death of I. V. Stalin is shown in the article. It is concluded that the main mourning events in the republic did not differ from analogous ones in other regions of the country: rallies, telegrams to the highest state bodies expressing the deepest sorrow, acceptance of obligations to continue the work of Lenin — Stalin. The majority of the population perceived the death of the head of the Soviet state as a personal tragedy.
